We made these for the season premier of Downton Abbey last night. (It wasn’t the actual season premier, but the day after the British premier, if you know what I’m saying.) They were the perfect accompagnement to bobbed hair cuts, shapeless shift dresses and Shirley Maclaine’s violent red lipstick. It’s going to be a good season.
French 75 – our take on the classic WW1 cocktail
Lavender simple syrup:
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 tsp dried lavender buds
Bring to a boil in a small sauce pan. Reduce to simmer and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Strain into a sealed container. Chill. Syrup will keep in the fridge for a week or so.
Juice of 1/2 a lemon
2 glugs of Amsterdam gin (if you’re into measuring, try 2 ounces)
1 glug of the Lavender syrup (1 ounce)
2 glugs Rose, Champagne or Sparkling Wine
Throw everything into a cocktail shaker except the Rose/Champagne/Sparkling Wine. Shake until icy cold. Distribute between two glasses. Top off with the Rose or bubbly, depending on how traditional you want to be.
Garnish with a twist of lemon peel.
