Charlotte Video Project presents Pages

A friend put me onto this neat video project based in my hometown of Charlotte, NC. Pages features 10 talented Charlotte authors reading excerpts of their work from inside Park Road Books, one of the last remaining independent bookstores in the queen city.

“We wanted to romanticize reading as best as we could,” they said, “and cinematic means seemed to be the best way to accomplish that.”

The videos are lovely, focusing on just the author and his or her words. In fact, they perfectly capture that magical intimacy of a live author reading, where the author’s words are arrows shot out into a crowd and they all find their target. Fitting for Park Road Books since it’s because of their awesome author events (featuring everyone from  Chelsea Handler to Pat Conroy) that they’ve managed to stay strong as an independent booksellers in spite of all the struggles facing the industry. (I did an interview with Sally Brewster from Park Road Books last summer, which you can read here, if you like.)

Rebecca McClanahan reading her love poem to bald men is so endearing.
