These book covers from Melville House Books are wonderfully sparse, evocative and cheeky. I’d love to browse an entire bookstore full of them. I particularly like the concept behind The Duel x5 set. I bought a copy of The Death of Ivan Ilych a few years ago, but hadn’t made the connection that it was published by Melville. No wonder I enjoyed that story so well; an intentional book cover sets the mood for the entire reading experience. The dark blue of this cover, perfectly reminiscent of a sunless Russian sky in winter, sets the scene for that bleek and urgent sleigh ride and the life-changing encounter between a servant and his master that ensues.
