Did you hear that St. Mark’s finally got a rent reduction? Looks like the popular East Village bookshop is safe from the chopping block. For now anyways. I’m pleased. The 40,000 people who signed the petition are pleased. The owners, no doubt, are elated.
I’m just sorry it sounded like a bit of a publicity stunt on the part of Manhattan borough president, Scott M. Stringer. Oh dear, did I just say that? What a cynic I am! I’m sure Mr. Stringer really does want to help out the independent bookstore. Yes, I’m going to choose to believe that he does.
And even if he doesn’t, the story suggests that there are 40,000 people in Manhattan who still value bookstores.
