What did y’all do for Save a Bookstore Day (June 25th)? We were driving home from a blissful vacation on Assateague Island where I unfortunately picked up a stomach parasite. Bummer… but no worries! Luke saved the (Bookstore) day by reading aloud chapters from Northern Lights, the first book from Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. Have you read this book? It’s fun to be reading fantasy again.
In any case, you’ve heard me expound the many merits of Independent Bookstores on this site before. You’re familiar with the benefits of buying local. You know that in this busy, multi-sensory world, taking a few hours to browse a cramped and cozy bookstore, surrounded by passionate and knowledgeable booksellers, is sometimes the best medicine to a chaotic life. And worth preserving.
So let’s preserve them. You don’t have to wait until June 25th, 2012. Go to your local indie bookstore today and show your support. Buy a book, or an armful of books. If you’re unsure where the closest indie is to you, try out IndieBound’s nifty Bookstore Finder.
