2 in 5 Adults Borrow Books First, Buy Later

My current stack of borrowed library books.

“Two in five adults and 36% of youth have purchased a book (hard cover or soft cover) after checking it out from the local library.”

Reading 2.0 reports on the 2007 ALA survey that discovered the huge influence libraries have on a reader’s buying patterns. All the more important today as government budget cuts and the shifting sands of the book industry call us to question how much we value our libraries.

How could independent bookstores work with local libraries to encourage this kind of borrow first, then buy phenomenon?
